Family Court Awareness Month
Portland, Tennessee joins Tennessee Safe Parents Organization and Family Court Awareness Month to proclaim November as Family Court Awareness Month.
This month highlights the critical role of our family court system in making decisions that prioritize the best interests of children. Since 2014, there have been at least 332 child deaths related to abuse in Tennessee, with an additional 322 still pending-with over half occurring in their own home, according to the TN State of the Child Report. These heartbreaking statistics underscore the importance of the need for a trauma-informed family court system that addresses domestic violence and coercive control with empirical evidence based research to best protect children entangled in domestic violence and child abuse situations.
By designating November as Family Court Awareness Month, we aim to raise awareness about these pressing issues and promote understanding of the family court’s critical role in protecting the rights and well-being of families in our community. Thanks to the efforts of the 113th General Assembly, two important laws—Abrial's Law (SB2627 and HB940)—have been passed to equip our family court system with the tools needed.
Join us in spreading the word this November and support our ongoing reform efforts! Check out this Tennessean article for more details on Tennessee's efforts.
