Steven Berry is a graduate of East Robertson High School. He grew up in Orlinda, TN and has been a lifelong member of the Portland Church of Christ. He served in the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment TNANG as a Stinger Missile Operator from 1994 to 1998. He worked for Fleetwood Homes in Gallatin TN from 1998 to 2002.
Steve began his law enforcement career in 2002 at the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office. There he served as a correctional officer, court officer and transport officer. When he left there in 2006, he was the night shift supervisor in the corrections division. In 2006, he went to the Springfield Police Department. While there, Steve served as an Officer, Field Training Officer, Corporal, and Sergeant. He earned several certifications. He is a POST certified Field Training Officer and attended Instructor Development. He is an Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor, Radar/ Lidar Instructor, DWI detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor. In 2018, he attended the FBI Crisis Negotiation School. During this time, Steve attended Basic and Advanced Law Enforcement Leadership Schools hosted by the University of TN Law Enforcement Innovation Center. He also obtained certification from MTAS at the Municipal Management Academy.
In March of 2020, Steve came to Portland Pd. He served as a Police officer and was promoted shift Sergeant in 2020. He held that position until 2024. He is currently serving as the Patrol Lieutenant for the department. He is also serving on the Crisis Negotiation team for Sumner County. In October 2024, Steve attended the Law Enforcement Management Academy at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.
