Building Codes

The Building Codes Department has now adopted the 2018 International Codes. This adoption will take effect on Monday, December 14, 2020. All permits issued on or after this date will be permitted and inspected by the 2018 International Codes.

If you have a permit that was issued prior to December 14, 2020, you will continue to be inspected under the 2009 International Codes.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

All commercial and industrial building permits and plans must be submitted through the City of Portland IDT Portal.

You must register for your account at: www.cityofportlandtn.idtplans.com and follow the procedures for submitting your projects for review.

The Building Codes Department issues many types of permits within the city limits of Portland. These permits include but are not limited to new construction, re-models, demolition, swimming pools, plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, moving, firework stands, and use & occupancy permits. This process typically includes plan review, permit issuance, and inspections of these projects.

The department is also responsible for the adoption and enforcement of codes relating to plumbing, mechanical and structural for both new and existing construction.
